The Phoenix area was an early adopter when it came to EV charging stations during the second wave of electric vehicle technology which was introduced by Nissan, General Motors and Tesla in the early 2010s. Many Phoenix communities worked with charging network companies in those early years and the area had more than 250 charging stations by 2012. During the last three years, companies have added more than 450 EV charging stations to the Phoenix metro area with an approximate 15% yr/yr growth in 2019 for level 2 and 3 units. And 2020 is looking strong as the Phoenix area has 89 new stations in the last 90 days.
There are multiple charging networks in the Phoenix area, including ChargePoint, EVgo, SemaConnect, Electrify America and the Blink Charging company, to name a few. Blink is the leader in the area with more than 350 charging stations. The leader in DC fast charging deployment in Phoenix is Tesla and its 92 Supercharger stations, while Electrify America has added numerous charging units in 2019 to support new electric models coming from Volkswagen, Audi, and Ford. Casa Grande, Az. at 350 kW. Currently, no EV model can accept that much power but the Porsche Taycan did achieve at a rate of 270 kW during its North American debut back in 2019. The overall total of DC fast charging stations in the Phoenix area is more than 215 as of March 2020.
